Hours per Week: 20 hours per semester

End Date: May 10, 2027

Position Summary

Access Fellows are peer facilitators who support students with disabilities as they navigate academic, social, and campus life. Access Fellows provide encouragement, practical guidance, and a student perspective that is real, responsive, and responsible. They help foster confidence, self-advocacy, connection to campus resources, and successful adjustment to college life.

Access Fellows meet one-on-one with students with disabilities to offer support with organization, communication, self-advocacy, navigating accommodations, time management, and connecting with appropriate campus offices and opportunities. Many students may be new to managing accommodations in a college setting, and Access Fellows serve as positive role models who help students build independence and a sense of belonging.

Access Fellows are paid for their work. Appointments may be held throughout the week and weekends, during daytime and evening hours, in accessible campus spaces and other approved locations.

Responsibilities

• Meet with students individually to provide peer support, encouragement, and guidance related to academic success, self-advocacy, and campus engagement.

• Help students identify strategies for organization, time management, communication with faculty, and effective use of accommodations and support resources.

• Assist in easing the transition to college life by sharing knowledge of campus systems, expectations, and opportunities.

• Keep detailed and accurate records of meetings with students.

• Participate in student support, outreach activities, and workshops as needed.

• Attend Access Fellow staff training and ongoing professional development/staff meetings during the semester.

• Maintain ongoing communication with the program supervisor or coordinator.

• Maintain the highest standards of professional behavior when representing the program and working with students.

Qualifications

• Students need to be in good academic standing.

• Applicants should be able to model effective time management, communication, self-advocacy, and engagement with campus life.

• Access Fellows need to be responsive to students’ needs and requests and help them identify strategies that will be effective for them.

• Access Fellows should be role models who can set an example of positive engagement with HWS.

• Applicants should be supportive, reliable, empathetic, and committed to fostering an inclusive campus environment.

• Experience navigating disability resources, accommodations, or accessibility-related issues is preferred, but not required.

• Students should be Sophomores or Juniors at the time of application. Training will happen during Fall 2026 and depending on performance, budget, and program needs, students may continue in the role through their Junior and Senior years, not including semesters abroad.

• Students who are abroad in the Fall 2026 semester should apply regardless; interviews and training can be conducted over Zoom.
