HWS Corps - Coordinator

Position Title: HWS Corps Coordinator (for America Reads and Boys and Girls Club of Geneva)
Semester/Year: Fall 2022
Positions available: 6-10
Job Location: Off campus—local schools and after school programs                        
Pay rate: $13.20 per hour
Hours Per Week: 5-6 hours (included 3-4 working with peer tutors and children , and additional time planning with CCESL staff and peer Coordinators)

We are expecting almost all HWS Corps tutoring efforts with local elementary school and middle school students to be in-person (on school based sites) for Fall 2022, but we cannot be 100 percent confident that there won’t be virtual components or that we won’t have to return to a virtual option. If we need to return to virtual, there will be different protocols and processes than when in-person, but the focus, as always, will be on offering meaningful literacy, academic, and mentoring support to local youth. 

Applicants should keep in mind that this position will involve working in close proximity to children under 12 may or may not be vaccinated. Therefore, all HWS Corps participants will be required to follow the safety policies of the school/program where they will be placed, which may include remaining fully masked while on the premises and/or being vaccinated.

Position Description:
  • Weekly hour commitment is 5-6 hours (included 3-4 working with peer tutors and children, and additional time planning with CCESL staff and peer Coordinators)
  • HWS Corps Coordinators will serve as a leader of HWS Corps, and also as both an academic tutor and social role model for local youth.
  • HWS Corps Coordinators will be expected to attend weekly or bi-weekly meetings with CCESL Staff (CCESL's Assistant Director or Program Assistant).
  • HWS Corps Coordinators will act as liaisons between their tutoring groups and CCESL Staff, reporting any obstacles that may arise (i.e. payroll questions, service-learning forms, attendance, etc.) 
  • HWS Corps Coordinators will need to help organize group transportation (coordinate carpools or become van certified), maintain communication with CCESL Staff and tutors, School/Program partners, and maintain accurate attendance records of tutors and youth.
  • HWS Corps Coordinators are expected to engage students in extracurricular activities throughout the gym, games room, art room, or in other school-based locations (library, classroom, etc).
  • HWS Corps Coordinators are expected to attend virtual and in-person professional development opportunities over the semester to support and improve their academic tutoring and mentoring skills (and on occasion co-facilitate, or lead group discussions)
 Skills Preferred:
  • Coordinators will need to be excellent at managing their time and be prompt for every meeting and tutoring session.
  • Coordinators must be dependable, as this job involves working with children and coordinating meetings.
  • Coordinators must be patient, helpful, and sensitive to the challenges children and tutors face while navigating Covid-19 safety protocols
  • Coordinators must be able to keep a positive attitude, and are encouraged to demonstrate leadership through creating and leading professional development trainings that tutors would benefit from
  • Coordinators must demonstrative effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Bilingual HWS students are encouraged to apply
