HWS Corps - Tutors
Position Title: HWS Corps Tutors (America Reads and Boys & Girls Club of Geneva)
Semester/Year: Spring 2023
Positions Available: 85+
Job Location: Off campus—local schools and afterschool programs
Payrate: $14.20 per hour
Hours Per Week: 3-5 hours per week
NOTE:
We are expecting almost all HWS Corps tutoring efforts with local students to be in-person for Spring 2023, but we cannot be 100 percent confident that there won’t be virtual components or that we won’t have to return to a virtual option. If we need to return to virtual, there will be different protocols and processes than when in-person, but the focus, as always, will be on offering meaningful literacy, academic, and mentoring support to local youth.
Applicants should keep in mind that this position will involve working in close proximity to children who may or may not be vaccinated. Therefore, all HWS Corps participants will be required to follow the safety policies of the school/program where they will be placed, which may include remaining fully masked while on the premises and/or being vaccinated.
Position Description:
· HWS Corps Tutors will tutor local students (kindergarten through 6th grade) for 3-4 hours a week (M/W, T/TH, W/F—mornings on T/Th are available but all other times are afterschool hours (generally in the 2:30-5 range).
· HWS Corps Tutors work closely with the Civic Leader for Literacy and the CCESL Assistant Director or the CCESL Program Coordinator to troubleshoot technical and communication difficulties and ensure best practices.
· HWS Corps Tutors work will focus on literacy support and homework help for elementary school students.
· HWS Corps Tutors, especially those designated to work with students at the Boys and Girls Club, will also be mentoring local students.
· HWS Corps Tutors will be working under an HWS Corps Coordinator but much of the work will be one-on-one with local students, and Tutors must be prepared to educate and build relationships during these one-on-one tutoring sessions.
· HWS Corps Tutors are expected to attend virtual professional development opportunities over the semester to support and improve their academic tutoring and mentoring skills.
Skills Preferred:
· HWS Corps Tutors need to enjoy supporting a child’s learning efforts.
· Tutors must be patient, helpful, and sensitive, especially in light of the challenges local students faced this past year.
· Tutors will need to be excellent at managing their time and be prompt for every tutoring session.
· Tutors must be able to keep a positive attitude even when faced with challenging situations.
· Tutors must be dependable, as this job involves working with children.
· Tutors must be creative and excited about sharing the joys of reading and learning.
· Bilingual HWS students are encouraged to apply.
