Position Title: HWS Corps Tutor

Semester/Year: Spring 2025 

Total Positions Available: 75

Supervisor: Peter Budmen

Pay rate: $15.50 per hour 

Hours per Week: 2-4  

Start Date: January 29, 2025

End Date: May 9, 2025

Position Description::

  • HWS Corps Tutors will tutor local students (kindergarten through 6th grade) for 3-4 hours a week.
  • HWS Corps Tutors work closely with the Civic Leader for Literacy and the CCESL Assistant Director (if with America Reads) or the CCESL Program Coordinator (if with the Boys and Girls Club of Geneva) to troubleshoot technical and communication difficulties and ensure best practices.
  • HWS Corps Tutors work will focus on literacy support and homework help for elementary school students.
  • HWS Corps Tutors, especially those designated to work with students at the Boys and Girls Club, will also be mentoring local students.
  • HWS Corps Tutors will be working under an HWS Corps Coordinator but much of the work will be one-on-one with local students, and Tutors must be prepared to educate and build relationships during these one-on-one tutoring sessions.
  • HWS Corps Tutors are expected to attend professional development opportunities over the semester to support and improve their academic tutoring and mentoring skills.
  • For tutors whom are bilingual: support bilingual students in celebrating their dual language abilities and aid them in their literacy acquisition in their non-native language. 

 

Qualifications:

  • HWS Corps Tutors need to enjoy supporting a child’s learning efforts.
  • Tutors must be patient, helpful, and sensitive, especially in light of local students' challenges this past year.
  • Tutors will need to be excellent at managing their time and be prompt for every session.
  • Tutors must be able to keep a positive attitude even when faced with challenging situations.
  • Tutors must be dependable, as this job involves working with children.
  • Tutors must be creative and excited about sharing the joys of reading and learning.
